What is Cohousing?

Cohousing is a kind of intentional community, cooperatively set-up and managed by the residents who, though living in private homes, usually around a shared open space and often with internal shared facilities, like a hall, that may act as a gym, meeting and social space..

This gives those of us who prefer a sociable context the opportunity to plan and manage our own lives in close proximity to one another, but without having to sacrifice privacy and self-determination.

The legal structure can be a homeowner association or housing cooperative, while some are community land trusts.

Some cohousing groups like to regularly share meals, attend meetings, and participate in community work days. As part of cohousing’s social nature, neighbors gather for parties, games, gardening, musical performances, movies, sports, and celebrations. Living in cohousing makes it easy for residents to form clubs, organize child and elder care, share information, free cycle and shared vehicles.

In advanced age Cohousing can help with finding paid carers, to attend to several residents, at different times, so making it worthwhile to contract to the community as a self-employed carer, or co-operative of carers.

Cohousing seeks to address the several issues that arise as we lesbian women age, by bringing some of us together into multiple accommodation.
